There are always a million reasons to smile—friends, love, a good joke, music—but here are my top 4 reasons you should take a second and make sure you smile today:
1. Smiling is Infectious
People naturally gravitate to smiling. A new study in the journal Trends in Cognitive Sciences, calls it “emotional mirroring.” What social psychologists Paula Niedenthal and Adrienne Wood found is that social situations simulate others’ facial expressions to create emotional responses in themselves. So smile more and just watch—most people will smile back!
2. You Can Smile for Yourself
Smiling creates positive feelings. Like laughter, smiling just feels good. And when we feel good, for that moment we don’t feel stressed or overwhelmed.
Right now I’m going through one of the more stressful times in my life. I launched my own talk show, The Never Settle Show, on a shoestring budget. Did I say budget? Well, what I meant to say is that I’m dipping into a couple of credit cards. So right now, finding life hacks to relieve stress can really make a big difference.
I’ve personally noticed when I’m around young kids I smile a lot, because they are smiling. It made me realize that at a young age we all smiled quite a bit. No need to change that now! Even when you don’t completely feel up to it, make time to smile for yourself.
3. Smile to Gain Confidence
Smiling is one thing, but smiling with confidence is completely different. Some people may think smiling shows weakness, others may be afraid to smile because their teeth aren’t straight, so they pull back. The good news is smiling is a super-power to be embraced.
If you aren’t happy about how your smile looks, do what I did and get Invisalign® treatment. The Invisalign system includes clear aligners that are specifically made for your situation. Hardly anyone can tell I’m wearing the aligners, even when talking to me up close, but my teeth are getting straighter by the day.
I’ve always been someone with a lot of energy, so don’t get me wrong—I’ve smiled a lot over the years. But sometimes I wouldn’t fully smile because I wondered if people were focusing too much on my teeth. Thankfully, with Invisalign clear aligners, my teeth have been gently shifting into the correct position, and even though I’m still in treatment, it’s making a big difference already.
4. Hack Conversations by Smiling when Talking
Smiling when you talk is an incredible life hack for job interviews, relationships and tense situations. But here’s the crazy thing—it doesn’t have to be in-person for it to have an effect, people don’t have to actually see your smile.
What am I talking about? Try this: the next time you are on a phone call, smile when you’re talking and pay attention to how impactful it can be. This works over the phone, and it’s amazing—even though you don’t have to be seen, people can really feel your smile!
Here’s the trick—you can’t fake that smile. Here’s what I do: I think of a life moment that really made me genuinely happy, and I use that for inspiration to smile while I’m talking.
Like I stated, there are always a million reasons to smile—friends, love, a good joke, music—but these smile reasons should inspire you to smile today and every day!
